Paradigm shift in academic management Harvard Business Manager
In higher education and research institutions we are "witnessing a paradigm shift towards more professional leadership", writes Norbert Sack, a consultant with Egon Zehnder International, Berlin, in the commentary for the German Harvard Business Manager Magazin.
However the increasingly more professional selection and development of leadership talent in these academic institutions does not mean that leadership principals from the business world can be applied unchanged to this highly intellectual environment, says Sack. In fact the challenges these leaders face are sometimes "even more demanding", he says, as compared to those in a comparable business setting. Above all the leaders in the academic environment must preserve the high degree of individual freedom while at the same time focussing the overall institution towards a common goal. This means that change in such an environment must primarily be achieved through inspiration and motivation.
