Time to take a career break? CEO Forum Group
Opting for a sabbatical is a controversial decision, writes Anna Young, a consultant at Egon Zehnder International, Melbourne, in the CEO Forum Group. There are many different types of career break and various reasons for taking time out, she adds. These include family responsibilities, personal wellbeing and the need for a fresh perspective on one’s own career. However, sabbaticals are not always positively received, warns Young. Indeed her experience suggests that managers returning to corporate life after a break have a tough time. Executives resuming their careers need to convince employers that their sabbatical has not negatively impacted their performance. “Clearly having strong relationships with senior people who will vouch for you is a critical success factor in taking a career break,” she concludes.
