Egon Zehnder International has recently hosted 7 informal meetings worldwide focusing on the changing role of the Corporate Treasurer. Senior finance executives met in New York, London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Shanghai to discuss the crisis in the financial markets and its impact on the treasurer function. Comments by many participants highlighted the need for a redefinition of the traditional, technical perception of the role. New demands on treasurers include the need to make risk and strategic assessments that call for a broad knowledge of current market developments. According to participants, treasurers will also need strong communication skills to steer board-level discussions and some of the creative skills traditionally attributed to good bankers.
