Sustainability: A “maximum elasticity” business model

What does sustainability mean for companies? It is a question on many leaders’ minds. According to Christoph Lueneburger, head of the Sustainability Practice at Egon Zehnder International, “being sustainable means having designed your business model for maximum elasticity with respect to spikes in the costs of your input resources.” In other words, it is closely tied to a company’s income statement or balance sheet, adds Lueneburger in an interview with Bloomberg News. Companies often hire Chief Sustainability Officers in response to an external event or as sustainability is integrated into their core strategy. Firms committed to an approach anchored in sustainability are increasingly differentiated in attracting top talent based on their culture and values, Lueneburger concludes.
