The Independent – How Airlines Can Boost Bottom Line With Leadership Diversity

Young low-cost carriers will continue to outperform their rivals unless older airlines break their “mono-male” culture and embrace diversity, reports The Independent, citing the results of a recent Egon Zehnder study. The success of EasyJet under its female CEO“raises the question whether diversity of leadership tends to foster a spirit and culture in favour of fresh ideas, openness towards change as well as agility in taking fast decisions,” notes Egon Zehnder consultant Christoph Wahl. The study reveals that older airlines tend to be dominated by male former engineers or pilots. Less than 13 percent of top executives in the industry are currently female. “The managements are inward-looking and often a handful of insiders make most of the decisions. All industry needs fresh talent and fresh ideas,” explains Wahl.
