Harvard Business Review – How to Gauge Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI), a concept first outlined by Daniel Goleman, is now widely acknowledged as the key differentiator between outstanding leaders and average ones. But how do companies measure EI in their executive talent pool, asks Claudio Fernández-Aráoz, a senior adviser at Egon Zehnder, in an article for the Harvard Business Review? Egon Zehnder has identified six EI-related competencies often linked to leadership success: results orientation, customer impact, collaboration and influencing, developing organizational capacity, team leadership and change leadership. According to Claudio Fernández-Aráoz, firms need to decide which competencies are required for a specific role and inventory them in potential candidates. This is not an easy process, but it will pay off, he notes.
