Stephan started his career at Bertelsmann AG as Assistant to the CEO. During this period he was based in New York where he developed a marketing strategy for Doubleday Book & Music Club. Stephan was then named President of Doubleday Canada, based in Toronto. After a successful restructuring, he moved back to Europe and was appointed Managing Director of Bertelsmann Club, a direct marketing business with a multi-channel strategy, in Switzerland. Stephan was subsequently promoted to Marketing Director and member of the board of the German Bertelsmann Club. His experience at Bertelsmann culminated in his role as Managing Director of Bertelsmann Verlagsgruppe (today Random House), which published how-to books, cartography books, and encyclopedia for distribution via department stores, specialized retail book stores, and corporate sales.
Stephan earned an MA (Diplom-Kaufmann) and a PhD in Business Administration (Dr. rer. oec), having studied at the Universities of Mainz, Munich and Saarbrücken.
