Developing Leadership
On March 14, 2019, Egon Zehnder hosted an intimate Leaders & Daughters dinner in Johannesburg, bringing together 31 guests including leaders and their daughters and mentees. Below are a few of the key insights from the evening’s discussion:
Build meaningful relationships, this develops resilience, trust and EQ because it is difficult.
Show up as your true and authentic self. Be reliable, credible and trustworthy.
Engage, challenge and confront diversity and prejudice issues across the generations. Communication is crucial.
Create a support system around you that includes both internal and external sponsors and mentors and enables you to thrive.
Seek out people who can teach and guide you.
Be open to ask and receive honest feedback, as this is the best way to develop your EQ and self-awareness.
Your career is a marathon, not a race. Don’t be in a hurry to get to the top, but be mindful of your pace, and under promise and over deliver.
Be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. It is important to earn your stripes, so take the time to learn and do the small things.
