CEO Succession in Financial Services

What a Decade of CEO Transitions Reveals About Leadership, Stability, and the Future of the CEO Role

New research analyzing CEO transitions reveals how boards are navigating succession amid regulatory pressure, digital transformation, AI disruption, and growing leadership volatility.

CEO succession is one of the most consequential responsibilities of a board. Regulatory scrutiny, geopolitical uncertainty, evolving risk environments, and accelerating AI adoption are creating new and complicated demands on leadership. Yet despite this disruption, financial services boards continue to favor stability, institutional knowledge, and proven execution.

To better understand how boards are responding, Egon Zehnder analyzed CEO transitions across 186 publicly listed financial services organizations from 2015 to 2025. The findings reveal a sector balancing competing priorities: adapting to change while preserving trust, continuity, and long-term performance.
